Being Fair and Beautiful

Since Dance is my passion, (though not my profession) I've spent hours in the internet searching the profiles of hundreds of dancers. Almost all of them are beautiful. I couldn't see even a single dark person in the field of dance. I feel deeply hurt, since I am dark. Dance, according to me, primarily requires purity of the soul and not beauty. But the society cannot accept dark dancers. People expect dancers to be fair and beautiful.
This blog is not about dance but the importance our society gives for the colour of the skin. I don't really feel sad for being dark, but when I dance, I feel hurt. Many a times in my life I've been mocked at by my friends and classmates for being born dark. Many of my classmates have ignored me just because I was dark.
Yet, after all these tragic incidents, I don't want to use any famous cream and bleach myself. I just want to be myself - with the colour that my parents gave me. I want others to accept me as I am - without commenting on my colour and appearance. Right from my childhood, I've wept for my colour. As I grew, I thought that my feelings have vanished. But they are still there, even greater. As I am moving closer to my career, I feel very anxious - "Will the society will accept me ?".
Aha- every tunnel has a brighter end. This dark tunnel of mine has a brighter end too..remember the saying "Count your blessings"? I've now decided to count my colour as a blessing. Here are my proofs (GOOD NEWS FOR ALL DARK BROTHERS AND SISTERS)
  1. There is no need to worry about sunscreen.
  2. There is no room for any distractions from my career. (If only I am fair, some one is going to be attracted)
  3. I need not spend much of time and money for make-up (However mush I try, it's gonna be the same)
  4. I can really feel proud of being a part of the long list of dark achievers ....from Lord Rama to Football player Ronaldinho.
  5. My colour reminds me of the olden days when my forefathers were toiling in the sun and providing food for millions of people. Yes! My colour is the native colour of the hardworking Dravidians!

The day sky may be bright, but it burns, whereas the dark night sky shelters the moon and the sparkling stars!

Counselling

I just got a seat alloted in Bharathidasan University - B.Tech Biotechnology.I was really surprised because I thought that I will not get any good college. But things were different
I couldn't believe that when I heard it. Because many a times I have felt sorry for being born as a "O.C candidate". I've always wished to remove the reservations. In my opinion, reservation is a real headache for O.C students. We must give equal importance for all people. Students are to be rated by their intelligence- not by their caste.Rather than modifying the syllabus requirements and having a grade system, TN government conducts the same exam for all students - OC and BC, bright and dull, urban and rural and then allots colleges on the basis of caste. Ironically, we Indians want to remove inequalities. Sounds funny!

My favourite film

Anbe Shivam
Of all the films I 've ever seen, this touched me the most. It is a simple story yet unfolded in a vibrant manner. All the characters in this story flash before our eyes even after the film is over. I can never forget the old nun in the church who saves Kamal Haasan. Though the inclusion of Villains seem to be unwanted, this film carries a heavy message that every person in this world deserves love and those who give it are GODS. I certainly agree with that. The story runs for just three days....Madhavan starts from Bhubaneshwar and ends up in Chennai. On the way he meets Kamal who just narrates his own story to him. Maddy who is a neo generation boy turns into a caring humanitarian as he travels with Kamal. The story reaches its pinnacle when Maddy sees the sufferings of people in a very cruel train accident and realises that he should be more of a human being than a city bred richy rich. The art direction was the one that thrilled me. Kamal, in that film was an artist by profession and a communist by principle. He includes his own ideas in whatever he draws. (He is actually part of a STREET DRAMA TROOP that propagates the rise of Labourers. ) Nallasivam (Kamal) is a genius in all forms of art. He makes art in paper, computer, walls, canvas and even food ! The art director has really brought out all his knowledge in this film !
I can't help crying whenever I see the song sequence of "Anbe shivam- Theme". Such is the visual portrayal in this film. Anbe shivam is a really wonderful film. There may be some minor flaws, but this film teaches something. Great witer Sujatha has once remarked that Kamal is a film maker...not a teacher. But I don't agree. This film taught me something. After watching this film many of my activities became modified. I literally killed my anger. I tried to help others. I want to be kind to others. I was totally against cinema till that time. In those days, I would say that Cinema teaches nothing. But this film taught me something......that's Kamal!

Music for the soul

Like all people, I love music. Music is one of my favourite pastimes. My favourite instruments are the Veena, Flute, Tabla and Jandai (Kerala Percussion instrument). I am a strong fan of Guruvayoor temple in Kerala. My head just spins around when I hear the Jandai during that Seeveli (Procession). I equally love the string instruments. I started liking the Saxophone after hearing the songs in "Duet".
I like all the songs of P. Unnikrishnan.Be it devotional or cine songs, I like them. I feel that there is a magical charm in his voice. His voice just floats over the music and swirls in the air. He gently swims over the lyrics. I like that way of singing.
In cinema my choice is Rahman and Harris Jayaraj. I like all Rahman songs (Someone told me that he did "BABA"
.....did he really do it? I don't see even a trace) and Harris Jayaraj Songs. Hey both of them have my favourite hairstyle.
But my choice in Lyrics is Bharathiar - the unbeatable and Vairamuthu - a maestro with quill (How are my adjectives?)
To enjoy the soothing lyrics of Bharathi, in the music of Rahman, with flute and Tabla in the orchaestra, that's my paradise!

Broken Wings

Yesterday my neighbour called me to catch their pet parrot which has fallen in our garden. I didn't want to disturbthe beautiful bird and so I tiptoed behind it and caught it. To my surprise it didn't fly at all. Then my neighbour shouted that its wings had been cut off. She also assured me that it wouldn't escape. I was terribly shocked by this. I didn't move for a moment. She mocked at me "She is afraid. She wouldn't move". (She had thought that I stood still because I was afraid..)Though I wanted to talk, I could not. Then I gave her the parrot back.
I was sitting silently for a few moments. I felt a deep grievance for the parrot....Poor thing ! It is such a great tragedy to have its main mode of locomotion cut off. It really struggled to walk. After all, flight is the greatest asset for a bird's survival. That lady may be providing food. But that poor parrot has been robbed off its right to fly. Parrots are born to fly, not to live in a cage. I can even tolerate the parrot being put up in a cage, but this idea kills me. Who frames these nasty ideas? Will that person be happy if his legs are cut off...when human beings are not able to simply tolerate a stamping of the foot, how can they treat animals cruelly and expect them to be greatful? WORST IDEA.
